The Role
Due to continued growth, and a long pipeline of contracted work, we are looking for trade-qualified spray painters and blasters with demonstrated experience in steel protective coatings.
We are looking for full-time employees to fill these positions in our modern workshops with above award wages. We have vacancies currently for both day and afternoon shifts, regular overtime is also available.
We are seeking to employ:

The Role
We are looking for a full-time and permanent Paint Production Supervisor for our Structural and Pressure Vessel manufacturing facilities in Geelong. The successful candidate will lead a team of industrial blasters and painters to provide high-quality surface protection to manufactured items to deliver world-class products for well-known clientele. You will be reporting to the Operations Manager and you will be responsible for:
- Provide skilled direction to Blast & Paint Team in planning and allocating resources to complete various works
- Monitor and provide ongoing tracking of individual projects against time, quality, and budget. This includes providing regular feedback and elevating any areas of concern to the Operations Manager
- Assist in the development and implementation of advanced work systems and practices.
- Review and develop blast & paint procedures to suit project requirements including assessment of methods considered.
- Manage and control the activities of the work team and workflow practices to ensure maximum performance and efficiencies.
- Always provide positive motivation to all team members within the labour force to ensure an ongoing positive work environment.
- Actioning efforts to minimize waste and act according to our Environment and Sustainability policy
Qualifications and experience
- Recent Industrial blast and painting experience (min 5 years)
- Leadership/supervision experience
- NACE Level 1 (or higher) Qualifications
- Experience in a manufacturing environment

- Confined Space
- Current Drivers Licence
- Certificate III – Trade Surface Preparation and finishing

The Role

- Actively participate in production meetings with the manufacturing team;
- Coordinating the quality team
Qualifications and experience
- Diploma / Degree in Quality / Mechanical Engineering
- Knowledge or experience with quality systems, including ISO9001 and ASME
- Knowledge and experience with Quality Management Systems, Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, etc.
- Knowledge and experience with Australian and international standards
- Experience in a manufacturing environment
- Internal and external auditing experience/qualifications
- Possess excellent written and oral communication skills
- Leadership experience

Successful candidates will be working alongside our team of skilled boilermakers and welders in our workshops in Northern Geelong and Penshurst. You will be reporting to the workshop supervisor, and you will be responsible for interpreting workshop drawings and to determine the required material, production method and sequence of operations to produce fabricated parts, within our quality requirements. You will also be responsible for operating and maintaining measuring tools, power tools and hand tools required to produce the fabricated parts.
Qualifications and experience:
- Certificate III in Engineering -Fabrication trade (or equivalent)
- Considerable experience in MIG welding,
- Experience with stainless steel is advantageous
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings
- Skilled in operating equipment used in fabrication
- Current & valid driver’s license
- Candidates with forklift, dogman (DG) and / or high-risk work licenses are encouraged to apply

You will be reporting to the workshop supervisor, and you will be responsible for interpreting weld procedure specifications to determine the required consumables and variables for the welding process, within our quality requirements. You will also be responsible for operating and maintaining measuring tools, power tools and hand tools and welding machines required to produce the fabricated parts.
Qualifications and experience:
- Certificate III in Engineering -Fabrication trade (or equivalent)
- Adequate welding skills to pass welder qualification test

Sub-Arc Welders / Robotic Welding Operators
Thornton Engineering is a reputable steel fabricator located in Victoria with workshops in Penshurst and Corio, Geelong.
Due to continued growth, and a long pipeline of contracted work, we are looking for trade qualified Boilermakers / Sub-Arc Welders / Robotic Welding Operators with demonstrated experience in the fabrication of heavy structural steel and pressure vessels cones and barrels.
With the use of the latest technology and equipment, Thornton Engineering is becoming the market leader in all of these sectors.
As a Sub-Arc Welder, you will be able to perform welding operations with our state-of-the-art Sub-Arc welding machines. You are required to work from drawings and weld procedures, setting up work, and determining operation sequences.
As an IGM Robot MIG operator, you will be able to perform welding operations with one of our state-of-the-art IGM robot-operated welding machines. You are required to work from drawings and weld procedures, setting up work, and determining operation sequences.
For both positions, it is essential to have thorough knowledge of welding procedures and practices for a variety of metals are essential to ensure the quality of the product. In addition to performing automated welding, some manual welding will be required as well as cutting metal with a cutting torch or hand plasma cutter.
On-the-job training on Thornton Engineering’s equipment will be provided for both positions.
