Overview

Thornton Engineering fabricated the Westgate Distributor Pedestrian Bridge for a valued client after the original fabricator, unfortunately, went out of business. The large bridge was fabricated with 437.5 tonnes of plate steel up to 50mm thick.

The West Gate Distributor project aims to improve truck access from Melbourne’s west into the Port of Melbourne.  To achieve this, additional lanes were added for the bottleneck, that was Shepherds Bridge and improved connections to Moreland Street to and from Footscray Road. As a result, it would also provide a safer route for cyclist and pedestrians over the Maribyrnong River via the provision of a dedicated Shared Use Path Bridge. Our scope of work included:

  • Detailed design
  • Material supply
  • Fabrication of structural steel work, girder beams, folded kick plate, folded fins, shear studs
  • Non-destructive testing (NDT)
  • Surface treatment
  • Assembly into modules
  • Loading onto transport
